Jessica walked over to Malibey's station. "Are you prepared to work, young one?"

Kerry felt a little flash of fear inside his chest. This was really it; the first time he was going to do actual magic. Yes, he had a vision of sorts, and he flew on a broom. But this was going to be something far different.

If he read the book correctly, he was likely going to change these beans on his desk into something that was non-bean. And that, dear friends, would be magic, he thought.

He took a cleansing breath and nodded. "Yeah," he said. "I'm ready to work, Professor."

Watching Professor Kishna do the motions on the wand made Kerry relax. He understood that it was the same motion, there was no silly stuff about reversing the movement or anything like that. That meant he could concentrate on getting the movement down, and doing it as shown.

He stood slightly to one side of the front of the desk, his wand in his left hand. He did the motion once, slowly, then again, and again . . . each time he increased the speed just a touch, not wanting to mess things up by going to fast and getting sloppy.

With his eyes half closed he continued the swirl and flick while, with his right hand, he started moving his fingers about, like he was playing a keyboard. In a way, he was: this reminded him of something he did last year. He'd heard a song his dad liked--Home by the Sea, some old song by Genesis--and there was a synthesizer hook in there he just loved. For some reason his dad decided to show him a YouTube video of the band playing the song line, and during the song the keyboard player was shown doing the keyboard bridge. Kerry spent days going over the video, watching Tony Banks play, figuring out the notes, comparing the placement on his dad's Casio, trying to estimate the right sounds.

After four days he figured he had it. He sat down, set up the keyboard--and played it as best he could. While he wasn't as fast, and the sound wasn't perfect, he did it. And he even got a, "That's great, Kerry," from his dad.

That had been a good time.

He was going to make this another.

Jessica watched Malibey prefect his wand movements. He seemed methodical...a thinker. That might help him on his O.W.L.'s, but he'll have to show heart to get through this class.

She put a hand on his shoulder. "Let's see then, Mr. Malibey," she said. "Are you ready to try?"

Kerry stopped with the keyboard fingering and opened his eyes. "Yes, Ma'ma," he said. "Lets give it a go."

He pronounced the incantation a few times. He remembered something Deanna said; something along the lines of having to lose something. This isn't about getting the science right, he thought. It's about doing it; making the magic work. Don't be thinking of this as an experiment: think of it as extending your will.

He selected a bean and separated it from the rest, setting it square in the middle of the desk. He held his wand over it . . . and using the wand flick as shown, he said, with just a little touch of force, "Escarabajo!"

Jessica watched Kerry swish his wand and say the spell. She grinned when the bean remained unchanged. "Yes, Mr. Malibey," she whispered, leaning in closer. "It takes heart to master the subtle art of transfiguration..."

She patted him on the shoulder and said, "Carry on, Mr. Malibey." She left him and walked back to the center of the classroom.

Kerry took it in stride. I didn't think I'd do it right the first time. Of course he knew he wouldn't. But that last remark . . . "It takes heart--" Ouch. "Welcome to the Home by the Sea," he intoned.

His first impulse was to look at what he'd done wrong, but there was that warning again: you need to leave something behind. He leaned against the desk, thinking, humming the words to the song about haunted houses over softly. Was he bothering someone? Right now it helped him think. And when he thought--

Kerry began to pace slowly around the area close to his desk. "Shadows but no substance/in the shape of men--" It was common with Kerry to move to this state, pacing and singing. Distraction with routine. It calmed. It helped him think.

But thinking wasn't the thing here. It was want; it was need. There is a limit to how you can think your way to making this work, he thought, but in the end you have to use your will. And that's what's needed. Leave behind the analysis; you have to want to make it into what you need it to be.

"Screw it," he said, muttering. He pulled a bean from the pile and set it apart. Without hesitation he flicked the wand and, focusing his self through the wand, intoned, "Escarabajo!"

    Nothing again.

Kerry nodded, casting the bean aside so as not to confuse it with the ones remaining. As he was about to wonder what he should do next, he hear a whoop from the other side. Annie had done--he couldn't see for sure, but it looked like she got something. His heart rose a touch; it was good she managed to pull off a transformation so fast. She needs to know she's good, he thought. That's only going to help.

He looked at his desk and back to his book. The picture of the beetle stared back, and though he didn't want to say it was mocking him, it felt a little like that. The more he stared at the picture, the more he realized that while he'd wanted to make the bean into something, he wasn't seeing the beetle. Sure, want and need, but there was no visualization. There was no--

    Heart.

    No feeling.

He stared at the picture for a good two minutes, capturing it all. Then he grabbed a bean and readied his wand.

    "Escarabajo!"

That time Kerry felt a thing pass through him, like a bit of static charge maybe, or how your foot might feel as it starts to fall asleep. But the there was there. You do got it, man, he thought, you just gotta get it to come out and do what you want it to do.

He began pacing again, songs running through his head like they were want to do. He was hearing Don't Look Back this time, and the lines, "It took so long just to realize/I'm much to strong not to compromise" was jumping out at me. Put it behind you, put it behind you-- There was a science here, he knew it. But he couldn't use it the way he used his regu . . . his Muggle science.

He told Annie the other morning about Niven's Law contrary to Clarke's Third: "Any sufficiently rigorously defined magic is indistinguishable from technology." Kerry knew that what this was: it was defined magic. And you needed more than brains to make this work.

But there was something Kerry forgot; even in "real" science there was passion. Passion in experimentation, passion in numbers, passion in discussion. What was he told in that dream the other night? Something like, "You can be brilliant and cold, with no soul--". No, he didn't want that. He didn't want to be cold any longer. There was no feeling in cold, in soulless.

    He wanted more.

"Far away and left behind," he said, not quite caring if he'd said it a little too loudly. He pulled a bean and set about flicking his wand over it while exclaiming, "Escarabajo!"

Kerry watched with stunned amazement as the bean turned into a beetle, and did so nearly as fast as the one Professor Kishna created at the start of class. It stood there, unmoving, and very slowly Kerry stuck his finger out to see if it was real.

The shell was hard, and it didn't feel like a bean any more. It was real.

He tried to raise his arm to get the professor's attention, but the weight of the moment fell in on Kerry that moment, and his comprehension was total.

Without ever making an attempt to hold back, he began weeping tears of joy.
