The Thom(p)son twins are from the Tintin comics, written by Georges Rémi under the name Hergé. The actual characters are named Thomson and Thompson (or, in the original French, Dupont et Dupond), and were said to be twin even though they have different surnames. Apparently the only way you can tell them apart is by their moustaches flares (or lack thereof).
In reality they were based upon Hergé's father and uncle, who were twins and both whom wore matching bowlers. And, yes: the Thom(p)sons were the inspiration for the band, the Thompson Twins.
