Re: School Air Patrol
12 September, Monday. 8:42 AM
he locker room/dressing room wasn't as crowded as Kerry thought it might be, but then, he heard someone else mention that the quidditch teams all had their own rooms, so it was fair to say they were getting ready in their own private spaces.
As Kerry quickly dressed he thought he would be a lot more nervous. Part of it was he didn't know for sure what all this meant. He kept hearing people say stuff like "Death Eaters", which is knew a little about, but there was something else in the mix: "Dementors". By the sound of it, that didn't sound good at all.
Finally dressed, he headed into the Equipment Room. Kerry was feeling just a little out of place; most of the kids here were older, and while there were a few people he thought were second years, the was only one other first year he recognized: the girl from Saturday's Madness who waved at him. Ah, maybe it is good Annie's not here, he thought.
He wondered what she was doing, and felt a little guilty that this was the first time he'd given her thought since leaving in her the Great Hall. It was a short lived guilt, though, because he was walking up to some uniformed students--older students--who were handing out brooms.
And one of them was looking at him.
"What broom you want, kid?" a boy with very light blond hair asked. His uniform was sort of a gray with lot of yellow piping. Probably Ceridwen quidditch team, he though. Kerry thought his hair was a lot like Raven's....
Kerry didn't need time to wonder about his choice. "Nimbus 4500," he said.
The kid looked at Kerry like he'd wandered in from another planet. "Dude, this ain't no time to be frickin' around," he said.
Just then another player--her pipping was green, so she was a Cernunnos player--said, "Give it to him, Leigh," she said. "I saw him flying Saturday with Vickie." The older girl--maybe 16 or so--looked him over. "He was keepin' up, so he should do okay."
Leigh nodded, wandered over to the cabinet where the 4500's were stored and grabbed one for him. "Good luck, kid," he said, and stepped over to another student.
Outside it was cloudy and . . . red? There was this red haze everywhere in the sky: Kerry'd never seen anything like it. He remembered the Headmistress saying something about an "anti-apperating charm" being up, and this must be it. Our very own Langston Field, he thought, then remembered to think of it another way--this could be used as a Langston Field, but it's designed to keep people out, not energy.
About 35 people were standing around, most in quidditch uniforms, and a few like Kerry--standing around in their flying leathers. And all with brooms. Kerry wondered how long it would be before they were in the air.
And then Professor Salomon walked up--

Re: School Air Patrol
Dressed in her leathers, Victoria stepped up and addressed the groups. "First off, thank you. You don't have to be here, and the fact you are says something about your character." She fidgeted for only a moment before continuing. "This is how it goes down. The teams--" she pointed to the quidditch and q-pot players, "you are going to run interference when it's needed. Some of you will be in the air, some on the ground. Everyone's going to do their part, so don't feel like you're not doing enough to help." He shook her head. "We don't need heroes; we need you to keep your head straight and your wits about you. We need you to be your best.
"As for you--" she turned to the spotters. "You'll patrol around the parameter looking for intrusions." She pointed to the sky. "It's colored red so you don't run into it, but a good think to keep in mind is don't go beyond the wall. You do, you'll hit that field." She slapped her gloved hands together. "You'll die. It's that simple."
Victoria began slowly pacing back and forth in front of the fliers. "When you are in the air you'll be on comm--" She pointed to her flying helmet. "Do not address anyone by name! One of the reasons you're not sporting ID today is because we don't want anyone knowing who you are. The team players are addressed by their sport, either 'Q' or 'P', the coven color and a number based on position. You spotters, you have your call signs. Call them out as we get into the air. Just remember, if you need to speak to me, I'm 'Night Witch'. And you want my attention, it better be something big."
She turned back to the spotter. "And you lot... When you see something, say what it is, give a location, and then get out of the area. You are not ready for combat, you got it? Let the teams handle it. You don't linger; once you call it in, unless told otherwise, you get out of the area. And, if at any time I tell you to clear out of the sky, you head ASAP for the nearest building or tunnel entrance, get off your broom and get under cover." Victoria pointed a finger at them. "If you can't do that, if you don't think you can follow orders, go back to your tower now." 10 seconds later everyone was still standing there.
"Good." Victoria stepped away and hovered her broom. As she mounted it she said, "All spotters in the air now. I want Q-Yellow, Green and Blue in the air along with P-Purple and Red. All the rest, I'll give you instructions once I know where I want you." She adjusted her goggles and looked back over her shoulder. "Good flying, and lets be careful up there."

Re: School Air Patrol
The climb was nice an easy. Kerry headed out over the pitch and then hear the instruction, "Starbuck, Selene: climb to 60 and begin a counterclockwise patrol of the wall. Stay inward 15."
Kerry nodded, though no one could see him. "Roger," he intoned, then heard a girl's voice say, "Okay--uh, roger," right after. Kerry looked around as they cleared the tree tops. Some 5 meters to his left, 2 back and down, was another broom. The girl looked up and waved. Something about that wave . . . oh, yeah. Kerry waved back, then said over the headset, "Well, I hope you like going in circles . . . Selene--"
They cruised over the Instructor's Resident and turned towards the Great Hall and Main Gate. "I think that's going to be doing that a lot today." He was getting focused on figuring out how high they were--he was only slightly sure of the size of the building around here--when he heard Selene whisper, "Let's hope that all we do . . . Starbuck."
Kerry nodded. Yeah--lets hope.
