Cloudy Days and Dark Potions Empty Cloudy Days and Dark Potions

Post  Helena Lovecraft Sun Aug 07, 2011 4:59 pm

The classroom was darker than normal. Helena turned up the lighting just a bit, as they were going to need the illumination for work. Today was going to be a very interesting day, and not just because of the demonstration Helena had in mind.

It's always a curious treat to have the students perform their first bit of the dark arts, she thought. Particularly when it's something like a potion . . . that always throws them the first time.

Helena began placing cauldrons on all the places where the students sat last week. She knew from past experience that once people began sitting in a particular seat, they would likely continue for the rest of the year. And sometimes for the rest of school, she thought, remembering her own seat in Dark Arts. Only one time did someone else sit in it--when she was starting her 3rd Year--and after staring at the boy for 20 seconds he finally became unnerved enough to get up and move. Even then you had a reputation--

One that was continuing here. No killing curses since the first class, but the word was out that Helena was not to be trifled with, or nuts, or both. And after last week's excursion "across the pond" and the rumors that were starting to leak out... well, Helena was certain she'd never have to worry about people taking her for granted.

Everything is set, Helena though as the did the final arrangement of potion ingredients. Now... for the little darlings to arrive.

It was darker than normal inside the classroom, though there was lights--not torches, but old-looking lamps with bulbs casting their dim illumination around the room. There were cauldrons at each of their study areas, so the rumor they were going to brew potions today was a fact.

As they placed their wands in the storage cabinet--and considering the run-in he'd had in Charms not having access to a wand here was probably a good thing--Kerry turned and headed to his chair, Annie right beside him. He saw Professor Sladen sitting at the front of the class, chatting with Professor Lovecraft, when he entered, but now, sitting in the front row, he was able to get a much better look. She was dressed in her witching finest: a dark smoky grey dress that it looked as if she poured onto her body; black lace gloves; black stocking and matching high heels. And to top it all off, she wore a black cap and black, pointy hat. Professor Sladen was playing up every inch the naughty witch--which Kerry took to mean that she was bringing some levity to what might be a hard class--

Hard to watch, Kerry thought. After the horror show that was the first class the last two had become more history and study . . . and then they were told, last week, that today would be a "show and tell" session. And from the look of things, with potions. Professor Lovecraft--dressed in a long brown skirt and matching blouse, her leather coat already hung, sitting next to Professor Sladen and chatting away--seemed relaxed. And she seemed relaxed when she smacked you twice and put you in the hospital.

After the day he'd had in Charms Kerry wondered if Dark Arts was going to top that--

Like I really have to wonder.

Annie was having a really rough day with her magic. Walking into Dark Arts, she was instantly made her nervous. The vibe was too relaxed, and that normally means something bad is about to go down...

She plopped into her seat and saw the cauldron. Potion making. She sighed heavily and shoved her bag under her seat.

Great. Just wonderful. There was no way Annie would be able to deal with this today. Why couldn't it just be a paper on some long dead bad guy. I probably wouldn't hurt anyone with a pen.

She folded her arms roughly across her chest and glared at the dumb cauldron in front of her. If she wants a potion, then lets play, she thought while another, more rational voice, wondered if she'd wind up hurting anyone if her potion blew up...

Kerry didn't need to look over and tell Annie wasn't in a good mood; the vibe was just pouring off her. They were doing potions--a dark potion, he was guessing, duh!--and he remembered when, during their first time in Professor Sladen's class, Keith nearly blew up his potion.

And this is probably going to be something worse, so messing up is not going to be nice.

Sliding as close as he could without looking like he was sliding too close, Kerry leaned over and whispered, "Don't worry; you're the Dark Witch." As he did that, he dropped his right hand onto Annie's left thigh . . . and gave her a nice pat--

And didn't remove his hand when he was done.

Annie managed a smile. She was putty in his hands and he knew it. He's right of course, she thought as she slipped her own hand under her desk and placed it lightly atop his.

How many nights had she lie awake in bed at night, thinking of him... She'd lost count but the fact of the matter was that he had become her last thought before drifting off to sleep and her first when she awoke. And then there were the dreams--but that was another story.

She glanced again at the cauldron. "Kerry, this class could turn ugly. I'm not sure I'll be able to get my potion right." She squeezed his hand. "Promise me you won't get to close...in case something happens."

Kerry patted her hand and grinned. "We nailed a 4th Year potion," he said in a low voice. "This won't be easy, and it's probably something we aren't expected to get." He shrugged. "The first month here, it seems like half the stuff we've done is out of our class range."

He removed his hand and sat back. "If we make it work, we do. If not . . ." He wiggled his eyebrows. "There's a dungeon here. I'm sure there's plenty of work space."

Annie giggled. "What's gotten into you, Mr. Malibey?" She gazed deeply into his eyes. "Whatever it is, I like it."

She still wasn't sure she'd be able to pull off whatever trick Lovecraft had up her sleeve, but at least Kerry was there, and who could ask for more than that--except maybe some privacy and a darkened dungeon. She felt her cheeks heat up and lowered her eyes.

While chatting with Erywin Helena used her excellent peripheral vision to watch the interaction between the continuing story known as the Malibey/Krum Love Affair. The dynamic was growing by the week, and today was no exception--

Kerry was in a good mood; however, Annie possessed a cloud over her head that could hide a Dementor. Then young Kerry sort of scooted nearer fair Annie and... if Helena had to guess by the expression of his young paramour, she'd guess Kerry touched her in a nice yet un-vulgar part of her body.

At least they're mature enough to know their limits--for now, she thought. Helena heard about Annie slipping between the sheets with Kerry in the hospital ward, and her heart went out to the girl, 'cause if the last two-and-a-half weeks were any indication, she'd discovered what longing for someone can make you do....

She got up and walked over to them. "Miss Krum. Mr. Malibey." She'd never been formal with them before, and at least the look on Kerry's face told her he thought they'd been busted. "How are you today? Any concerns about today's class?"

Kerry tried not to jump; even after what Professor Douglas did this morning he was pretty certain that doing some of the things they were doing would get them in trouble one day.

Even though he almost jumped, he managed to keep his cool while extracting his hand. Professor Lovecraft always looked the way Kerry remembered seeing her the first time: calm, very cool, and always studying her surroundings. If Kerry didn't know she was a scary person, he'd imagine she was a scary person.

"I'm doing well, Professor," he said. "Hoping today is . . . interesting."

Annie was so absorbed in her own private moment that she didn't notice their professor until she was standing right there in front of them. As Kerry's hand slipped casually back to his own lap, she immediately tensed while sitting up straighter in the chair.

Instead of reaming them, their professor actually shocked Annie by asking if they had any concerns. Uh, yeah. Only they're not so much concerns as near full blown anxiety attacks over what brand of torture you're about to unleash--and how badly I'm going to screw it up.

Annie smiled weakly and said, "I'm sort of having an off day, Professor. I am a little concerned I may hurt someone." Annie forced a laugh. "Kerry was trying to convince me that it'll be fine. I suppose we won't really know that until we actually begin."

Helena slid onto the desk next to Annie, trying to relax them. "We all have off days, Annie," she said. "You can't be at your peak all the time--and those that think they can suffer for the hubris.

"The good thing about potions is that it's a matter of measure and process." She pointed to the cauldron. "You add; you mix; you measure." She gave Annie and Kerry another of the famed lopsided Lovecraft smiles. "And the fact it's a 'dark' potion matters not."

She patted Annie's hand. "I know what you have inside, Annie," Helena said in a low, private tone. "Don't worry about doing your best, or impressing me. Do what feels right for you."

She turned to Kerry. "And no killing curses for you. I've sworn off that, remember?"

She stood up and returned to her place next to Erywin. "Five minutes before be begin!" she told the class before sitting.

Helena stood and assumed her place before the class. "Good afternoon, my fine young adherents of all things dark and gloomy," she said, trying to inject levity into the room. "Today we are going to discuss a section of the dark arts that is greatly overlooked, and that is the field of potions.

"Potions are often ignored because--well, any good potions maker will tell you that there is often little difference between what they do and what a 'dark arts' potion will do." She chortled. "Not so. Not so by a long shot.

"Potions can do anything: perform an effect, heal, cure... and kill if need be. It's a concoction, nothing more or less.

"A dark potion is something more." Helena began her slow pacing that she often did when lecturing. "If the dark arts are those magics that twist the soul, then a dark potion will get into your soul and twist it from the inside out." She pointed to the cauldrons. "And as you might have guessed, you're going to take a crack at making your first dark potion.

"Before we continue, are there any questions?"

Annie was afraid to ask what kind of potion they'd be tackling, since her knowledge of dark potions included those that could injure simply by inhaling the vapors.

She'd never let us brew something like that, though... Would she? Annie remained silent and leaned forward in her seat, wondering what type of potion they might brew that would be safe enough to use in a classroom.

When no questions were forthcoming, Helena moved on. "There are many dark potions available, and all of them contain their own form of nastiness." She picked up a small container from her desk. "This is known as the Draught of Submission. As you can surmise, the idea behind this potion is that whomever consumes it is then forced to do you bidding. And you would be right--" She looked around the room. "Up to a point."

Helena faced the class and held it for all to see, then set it upon her desk again. "Why do you need this? I can hear some of you asking that question now. Why bother brewing up this crap? I can simply perform an Imperius Curse and force someone to do my bidding." She held up her hands as if asking for a response. "Is that correct? Yes--and no.

"The Imperius will bend someone to your will, this is true. This is also one of the Unforgivables that can be resisted--as some here might attest." Helena looked at no one so as not to give away any secrets. "It's also a simple matter for someone to be brought out of an Imperius if other know the person is under. This is one of the reason Aurors are trained to not only recognize who might be under the control of an Imperious, but how to snap them out if they are.

"Now this potion--" She pointed to the container again. "The Draught of Submission is brewed in such a way that the effect of control are meant to not only remain in place, but assure the person who has administered the potion that the individual who has consumed it will remain under their control... or suffer the consequences.

"The Draught is designed to ensure compliance--for if the individual who has consumed this potion does do as ordered, they will find themselves suffering from intense, horrible pain." Helena made a full turn on the floor as she spoke. "I've tested the potion on myself, and when I say intense and horrible... I am not exaggerating." She nodded and stopped, facing the class once more. "And that's the insidious feature about this potion; it coerces an individual to bend to another's will through a combination of control and pain. For if they try to fight the control--" An eyebrow shot up; Helena said nothing further.

    "Are there any questions?"

Annie sat enraptured, hanging on every word. A potion that forces its victim to do your bidding. When their professor asked for question, a million things flew through her mind, but she was determined not to interrupt the flow of the lecture.

She folded her hands in her lap and glanced around the room, waiting.

"Now, simply describing this potion to you..." Helena's smile was a chilly as the weather outside, "isn't enough. This is where a practical demonstration comes into play." Her smile turned into another one-sided grin. "My last demonstration resulted in a few killing curses and a student in the hospital for observation, and while I'm certain there are a few of you--" She looked out over the students, "willing to participate, I've been informed some students may find said demonstrations... disturbing.

"However, our own Mistress of Potions and all-around naughty witch, Professor Sladen--" Erywin crossed her legs and gave the class a friendly wave, "has agreed to participate. I've given Professor Sladen a very good rundown of what this potion can do--and that I would try to show the class, with her help, all of those effects for you." She touched Erywin on the shoulder. "However, the good professor is a bit touched, so she's agreed to shoulder the responsibility of imbibing the potion and allowing me..." Helena's tone turned down right solemn. "control."

Helena walked to her desk, opened the container with the potion, and poured out a small measure. "You don't need much. This small amount will keep someone in thrall for several days; a much larger amount will last weeks or even month before needing to be re-administered." She held the glass out to Erywin, who then took it. "And the effects of this potion are accumulative; if I kept giving her this amount for several days running, she would find herself in the grips of its effects for many, many weeks."

Erywin looked to Helena, whose only response was to nod. Erywin said, "Bottoms up!" and consumed the potion, then handed the glass back to Helena before recrossing her legs and folding her hands in her lap.

Helena waited 30 seconds to see if Erywin expression would change. She continued to look straight ahead with a friendly smile on her face, acting as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening. Helena knew better, and was about to show the class....

"Erywin." She looked up as soon as Helena spoke. "How do you feel?"

    Erywin shrugged. "I feel fine."

Helena nodded. "Good, good." She moved closer to the wand cabinet. "Erywin, bring your pretty little butt over here, now." In a moment, Erywin was up out of her chair and standing before Helena, as if what she'd asked was normal.

"Let me see a smile on your face," Helena asked, and Erywin's face lit up even more than before. "No, love: I want you to be happy. Just like back when we were in Slythern." Erywin's smile was now beaming, and her eyes took on a far-away look, as if she were seeing the things the way they'd been back at school at Hogwarts.

"Do you remember your favorite song?" Helena asked. "The one you used to sing to me?"

Erywin closed her eyes and sighed. "Oh, yes, I do, Hel."

Helena touched Erywin's right cheek. "I want you to sing it for the class, Erywin--and for me. I so want to hear it again." She patted her cheek so gently. "Sing and give us a little dance, too, please."

Erywin adjusted her hair, getting is affixed upon her head, then began sashaying back and forth as she sang in a remarkably lovely voice. "Each morning I get up I die a little, Can barely stand on my feet. Take a look in the mirror and cry--"

Helena stepped away from her and looked to the class. "Professor Sladen knows exactly what she's doing. At the moment she's enjoying herself--" Helena allowed her to sing as she did a slow twirl, "Somebody, somebody; Somebody, somebody. Can anybody find me somebody to love?..."

"At a time like this," Helena said, "when you are freely giving yourself over to the potion, it can fill you with something akin to ecstasy--" And Erywin was happy; Helena had to say this was probably the happiest she'd seen Erywin in a very long time. Erywin was belting out, "But everybody wants to put me down; they say I'm goin' crazy--" when Helena shouted, "Stop! No more singing and dancing!"

Erywin stopped in her tracks, looking just a little puzzled. "Do you know what you were doing?" Helena asked.

Looking a bit embarrassed, Erywin said, "Yeah. You got me to singing again."

Helena took Erywin's hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. "And you still have a lovely voice." She held Erywin's hand close to her face. "I need to do one other thing, and know this will hurt."

Erywin giggled. "Oh, Helena, what are you going to do?" She turned to the students. "Probably going to make me go down on all fours and start doing dog tricks." Some of the students laughed, though it was a nervous laugh.

Helena nodded. "Oh, that would be nice. However..." She released Erywin's hand, allowing to drop to her side. "But that would be too easy, because I know you, Erywin..." Helena felt but a moment's hesitation, then pushed right on through. "And that means I need to do something you're not going to like."

"And what would that be?" Erywin asked.

"Do you feel comfortable?" Helena asked instead, ignoring her question. When Erywin nodded in agreement, Helena said, "I want you to turn and face the class." Erywin did exactly as told, the playful smile still upon her face.

Helena took a small, quick breath and said, "I order you to do the following, Erywin:

"Tell everyone in this room you don't love me... and mean it."

Annie watched along with the rest of her classmates, smiling brightly when Professor Sladen began her song, when things suddenly took a turn for the uncomfortable.

Damn her, Annie thought, watching their potions mistress struggle with Lovecraft's last order. She felt a fire burn in her stomach and curled her hands into tight fists. She wasn't necessarily trustful of either witch, but Sladen didn't deserve to be made a mockery in front of their class to prove a point any more than Kerry deserved to turn class guinea pig to demonstrate control.

Kerry was suddenly shell shocked. He could almost feel what Professor Sladen was going through . . . That last curse felt like getting my hand stuck in a light socket, he thought.

But this wasn't a killing curse; this was some you wished you died from.

Professor Salden's face became of mask of disbelief. She turned to Professor Lovecraft--who'd gone totally stone faced--and mumbled, "I can't say that, Hele--"

The side of Professor Salden's face twitched hard, and she slipped to the side as if she'd been hit with a hard cramp. She straightened and managed to say, "Helena, I can't--" before the cramp his again, this time with far more force.

Erywin took a step towards Helena. "Please, love, I ca--" And she clutched her mid-section and screamed in pain.

Helena saw Erywin reach out for her after the pain cut through her. "Just say it, Erywin," she ordered, her voice controlled but tight. "Say it and make the pain go away. You know this is how it works."

Sweet was beginning to break out on Helena's brow. She knew Erywin would never say what she'd ordered, that she'd go down screaming first... Erywin flopped against her, holding onto her shoulders, mumbling, "No, no, I can't, I can't!" and began moaning through intense pain as the potion twisted at her.

And all Helena could do was watch and hope for just a few seconds more--

But even she couldn't take it. Tears sprung to her eyes as her voice grew louder so she could be heard over Erywin's moaning. "Just say it, Erywin," she demanded, clutching her tightly, "say it, just say it, you silly girl, say it, say it, goddamn it, Erywin, say it!!!

Erywin's feet slipped from under her and they both tumbled to the floor as Helena couldn't give her the support she needed. Enough of this Shit! she though, and reached into her pocket for the vial with the antidote. As Erywin thrashed about on the floor she poured the antidote into her mouth, and as she took it in her reaction first diminished and then, after 20 seconds, vanish, leaving Erywin gasping for air.

Helena got to her feet, dragging Erying up and then holding her tightly. "I'm sorry," she whispered, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I didn't--"

Still crying, Erywin slammed a fist against against Helena's chest. "You're horrible!" she screamed, "Horrible, horrible! I hate this! I hate your fucking dark arts, why do you do this to yourself, why, why do you do it, why, why, why...." She trailed off into a volley of tears--

And Helena, despite trying not to give into emotion, quickly follow. Her flow wasn't as hard, but her heart was breaking. "I'm sorry, love, god, I'm so sorry," she mummered. She held tightly against her chest and let her cry out, let her drain the pain from her body into her....

Annie was seething with rage as the scene played out in front of her. The tears streaming freely down her face, made dark puddles in her lap as she screamed STOP IT, STOP IT YOU MANIACAL BITCH in her mind.

When the antidote was given, Annie breathed deeply and wiped her face. This is too much. I'll never be able to do that...to anyone. But that was just it, wasn't it? Helena wanted to prove a point, and this was one lesson Annie wasn't ready to accept.

Ella was about beside herself. Yeah, the whole idea of this potion was really cool, and being able to control someone else was incredible--she eyes at least two people she'd love to try this on....

And then it turned into some self hating lesbian whipping session.

Ella really didn't need to know these two--uhg!!! And here she thought Lovecraft was this bad ass, hardcore witch! Freakin' lezzies! God! Ella knew there was nothing like this a Hogwarts, and the more she saw here, the more she wished she were there.

Finally, when the were standing at the front of the class crying, Ella just couldn't help but comment to Anna, "Awwww, don't they look sweet?"

Unfortunately for Ella, her voice carried....

The slow turn of Helena's head should have been the only indication anyone needed that if she'd had her wand in hand, any avada kadavra launched in Ella's direction wouldn't have been "pulled back"--

"Ella." Helena's eyes were filled with tears, but her voice was iron hard. "You just watch me hurt someone I love more than anything else; what do you think I'll do to you if the next words that come from you gob aren't, 'I'm sorry, Professor'?"

Her eyes were burning holes into the student. "Unless you want to spend the rest of your 1st Year sounding as if you've consumed large quantities of helium, I suggest you shut the hell up and don't speak unless called upon." She helped Erywin to her chair. "Oh perhaps you don't really need your voice--" Helena's tone turned icy hard. "Ever."

Knowing that everyone needed to step away from that, Helena announced, "We'll take 20 minutes. When I return we'll begin brewing the potion." She got up, helping Erywin along, as they entered the rooms at the back of the classroom.

Annie watched their professors disappear and turned to face Kerry. "I don't think I can do that, Kerry." Her breathing was coming in quick gasps and her head was spinning. 'Even if I manage to get the potion to work, what if she decides we need to administer it to each other and makes me..."

She couldn't continue--she didn't even want to think about what that potion might do. "I can't, Kerry. I won't."

Annie glanced beyond Kerry and noticed Ella. She'd been put in her place, but Annie wouldn't mind trying an entire cauldron out on her.

She calmed down and focused her energy on breathing. "Lovecraft wanted to prove a point." She looked up at Kerry. "The cost for doing the spells in this class will be high, Kerry."
