Annie put the horrors at the beginning of their class behind her. Professor Sladen seemed to be quite content again after her seclusion with Professor Lovecraft. She smiled as she thought how sweet making up after a disagreement could be. In any case, today’s lesson had been one of control. There cannot be control unless you are willing to put yourself out there and command it—regardless of what it might cost.

She could not deny that there was a teeny bit of her being that was excited to finally be trying her hand at a dark potion. She had spent years pouring over her father's old books, wondering at the magic they contained, and now was her chance to try it for herself.

Everyone seemed to be busily at work, gathering supplies and plopping them in front of their cauldrons. Time to get to work yourself, Annie.

She selected the things she needed to make her own brew and sat back down, Pulling her cauldron a bit closer, she added all of her spring water and sprinkled the dandelion in. Using the long stirrer, she began her brisk clockwise stir, stopping after exactly one minute.

As her minute elapsed, Annie rested her cauldron over the fire and waited for the water to come to a boil. She sat back and glanced over at Kerry. He was busily arranging his ingredients. Not a bad idea, she thought as the first puffs of steam began rising out of her cauldron.

She peeked over the rim, saw the first gently bubbles rising to the surface, and waited until there was a good rolling boil before starting her timer.

Two long minutes later, she reduced the heat and brought the flowery water to a slow simmer.

    Two minutes later…

Annie was please to see everything going smoothly. This is going a lot better than charms. Keep it up, Annie…

While she was waiting, she arranged the rest of her ingredients—making the entire potion making process simpler.

She’d also weighed out the henbane, pulling some back as she went over 100 grams. When the time came to add it to the simmering cauldron, she lowered it into the water and stirred counterclockwise, making sure everything was dissolved completely and carefully checking the color…

Annie smiled as she saw the buttery yellow color emerge. So far, so good.

She quickly turned up the head and watched as the brew began its energetic dance within the confines of the cauldron. She snatched up the small vial of dragon’s blood and filled the dropper, careful to squeeze out a single drop of the viscous liquid.

She had seven minutes to figure out how to extract the juice from what looked like a shriveled bug. A mortar and pestle would be pretty useful right now, she thought and then had an idea. Grabbing her knife, she flipped it sideways and used the flat part of the blade to squish the beans into her desk. Success.

She took her time squeezing out every drop of juice, which shocked her given how dried out they appeared. When her seven minutes of waiting time were up, she tossed it in along with the syrup of hellebore.

She slipped her long stirrer back into the potion and began to stir clockwise. After two minutes, she removed the stirrer, lowered the heat, and waited for what felt like the longest ten minutes of her life…

After ten minutes, Annie peeked into her cauldron and noticed it had turned an inky black and had an odor. Great. The heat was probably too high and something burnt at the bottom. It was too late to throw it all out and start over, so she moved onto the next step, hoping against all odds this was able to be saved.

She had already weighed out her arnica, so she tossed it in, stirring clockwise as she went. When everything looked dissolved—she really couldn’t tell because her potion was that dark, she lowered the heat a touch and let it continue simmering for another three minutes…

Humm... you're a hoppy little twist today, aren't you?

You got yourself a nice little 20 point bonus; why don't we make it 25?

And since you popped this sucker over 100 points, add another D10 mod onto this for the rest of your roll.

You and your pretty boy scare me. Sis says you both should go back to Hogwarts before you hurt someone.

Annie’s heart soared as she peeked into her cauldron after waiting the entire twenty minute resting time. It was a beautiful powdery blue color and the burnt smell she'd detected before was gone. Lowering the heat did the trick.

Now it was time for the hardest part of this potion…and for that, she’d need her wand. She shot her hand up in the air and waited.

Helena was so close to cursing Anna into unconsciousness that having a student's hand fly into the air was a welcome distraction. And that handed belonged to--

"Yes, Annie. One moment." She walked over and stood before her, examining the contents of her cauldron. "Do you need your wand?" Nodding in affirmation, Helena returned to the cabinet and retrieved her wand.

As she'd done with Kerry she passed the wand with both hand to Annie. "There you are," she said, then stepped back to watch what happened next.

Annie thanked Professor Lovecraft and got right back to work, audience and all. She added the bloodroot and used her stirrer, moving in a counterclockwise motion for exactly ninety seconds.

When the contents of her cauldron came to a complete stop, Annie dipped the end of her wand into the brew and cleared her mind, only allowing thoughts of complete control through. When she was ready, she spoke the incantation.

    “Hoc erti tibi…”

As with Kerry Helena watched very carefully. She felt Annie was very... calm in her rending, and she suspected that was going to help the final quickening of the potion.

When the moment was over Helena step up. "Very good, Annie," she said, retrieving the wand. "Please continue." As she turned her back she thought, And we'll see how it turns out in another 25 minutes....

Annie watched their professor leave with her wand and turned her attention back to the potion. At that moment, she felt conflicted. She was positive the spell worked, but it wasn’t quite the same effect as a charms spell. I guess the proof will be in the administering, she thought and shrugged.

She returned her potion to the heat, careful to bring it back up to a simmer. When the tiny bubbles began to break the surface, she added her hillwick extract and went to town, stirring in a counterclockwise direction for fifteen seconds.

When the time was up, she sat back and smiled at a job well done. There was nothing left to do but to wait out the last ten minutes and hope nothing burned.

As the time wound down, Annie removed her potion from the heat, careful not to spill it, and waited the necessary time for it to cool to room temperature. While she waited, she pulled out the latest issue of the Quibbler.

As she finished the curious article about the attack on Hogwarts and time turners, she realized her potion was probably at the correct temperature for bottling. Slowly, she peered over the rim of her cauldron…
