Dark Potions for Emma

Ah, Sweet Emma... And this time I do mean it.

Steady work, girl. Do your best.

For the first time, Emma wasn't nervous in Dark Arts. Truthfully, just walking in the door made her anxious, but today, when she heard they were doing potions, Emma eased up. She felt relaxed.

Mostly because she loved doing potions. Sure, she'd had problems with the one they'd done in Potions, but that was a 4th Year and for the most part no one got it. Except... She didn't want to think about that.

As she got through the first two steps all seemed to go well. She had a good feeling that today, she was going to show Professor Lovecraft--and maybe even Professor Sladen, who decided to stick around--something good.

Emma liked henbane just for the name. She did a good job getting it mixed in, taking her time like the instructions said. I really want to see this yellow, she thought. She wondered how everyone else was doing, then thought it best to not worry about them, but rather, worry about herself.

Ooooh. It was not only yellow, it was a very nice yellow. That's what Emma wanted to see.

She was about to cut her sopophorous beans when she saw Kerry crushing his--this after speaking with Professor Sladen. So she tried the same, then cut the bean. She put her stuff together and continued with the next step.

And hoped for the best.

Now came the arnica, and this would be the tricky part of Emma. She knew she had to do this right if she wanted to get the right color. So in with it--stir--in with more--stir....

Yes, she thought it was going great. Maybe today is the day I do it right, she thought. I could really use being good for once.

Now it was really time--

She asked Professor Lovecraft for her wand. Once she got it she felt the fear run right through her. Push it away, she thought, push it away. She dipped her wand into the mixture.

“Hoc erti tibi.”

She withdrew it and check the color. Blue, blue, blue--

It was blue, but just blue. She wasn't sad, but she was hoping for more.

Never mind. Finish it; there's still more. She poured herself into the mixture, much like she did with her wand. As it came down to the end Emma felt that today had been a very good day. Even if I don't get this potion--

At least I don't feel scared. Not any more.
