Asking about a spot to study

Post  Annie Krum on Mon Aug 22, 2011 6:55 pm

Annie knocked on Professor Semplen's office door and waited until she heard a faint 'come in' from the other side. "Ready," she whispered to Kerry, and pushed the door open.

"Good afternoon, Professor." She smiled warmly and took a seat in one of the chairs he had set up for such visitations. "We've just been to see Professor Douglas and have a question for you."

He'd been half expecting this meeting most of the day. Ever since Wednesday had approached him this morning with her "good news" Holoč wondered when he'd be meeting with Annie and Kerry.

"Okay." He folded his hands and placed them upon his desk. "Ask away and we'll see if I can help."

Kerry chimed in. "Annie and I decided to go into the Advanced Charms class--" He know that Professor Semplen knew they were going to be asked, so no point going over that. "We have a lot of catching up to do on the 1st Year charms--and maybe others . . .."

He cleared his throat and moved ahead. "We were wondering if we could set up a space in the Tower Dungeon so we don't have to go walking over the Charms Dungeon all the time?"

Annie nodded. "It would be more convenient to be able to study after classes and maybe into the evenings. Is anything like that possible, Professor?"

Holoč found it interesting that these two were asking about a study space. Most of the 1st Years are still finding their way about, he thought, or trying to get out of study--and that want a study area.

He considered the request for a moment, then stood. "Come with me, please." He exited the office then headed for the stairs to the dungeon. He only came down here for the weekly Herbology Club meeting on Sundays, and that was only so he could make his way to the Main Dungeon. Most of the time he had little reason to be in the Tower Dungeon proper--

"There are a lot of clubs down here," he said, looking about once they reach the main dungeon floor. He turned to the right, following the hall toward the outer wall. "So most of the rooms here are taken." The followed the curving wall, then stopped before a door in the outer wall. "However--" He opened the door, revealing another stairwell. "There is a second level."

He hurried down the stairs and stepped out onto the lower level. While it was still the same vaulted ceilings and defused lighting, somehow it seemed just a little darker and a little more quiet. "You weren't down here during the emergency because you were busy elsewhere--" He didn't dwell on their participation in the Siege. "But we brought some students down here. Most people don't like it here because they say it's haunted. And there's only one other exit, going up to the Dungeon Corridors." He looked over the doors as seeking something. "Ah, this will do," he said, throwing open the door. Inside was a plain room, well lit and a high ceiling, maybe 5 meters by 5. "Would this do?"

Annie followed their coven head down into the depths of their coven. When he motioned them inside, she looked around and squealed with delight.

"Can we really have this to study in, Professor?" The room was perfect in every way, private and quiet. It was bound to be a place for learning about more than just charms...

Holoč looked Annie over and recognized that look . . . same as I've seen with my daughter, he thought. It's all about the future wedding and boys and . . . and he didn't want to think his daughter might have similar thoughts as Annie.

"You can have this room to study--" He switched over into Bulgarian for Annie's benefit, "Just study, Annie." He switched back into English. "I can change the door frame--that's how you tell which room has been taken; the frames are a lighter color."

He watch Kerry and Annie reconnoitering the small room. "You know, I don't often do this for 1st Year, so I expect you--" He shook his head. They are serious about study, he thought. So what if they share a moment now and then? "I trust you'll put the room to good use."

There was one last thing: "How long would you like to reserve?"

Kerry figured he'd go all in and see if they could get it, 'cause . . . 'cause I know what Annie is thinking--

"Could we have it all year?" he asked. "Reason I ask, Professor--Annie and I have been thinking of doing more . . . we want to try things on our own: advanced things." Kerry looked just a bit embarrassed by asking. "We're not trying to be anti-social or anything, but . . . we seem to do well when we work together.

Holoč was temped to go into fatherly lecture mode. Neither student had done a thing to disappoint him: in fact, their actions earlier in the month brought more than a few ... acknowledgments in his direction considering them. And academically there was no question they were quickly moving to the front of the queue for the 1st Years.

There was a concern, however, and he wanted to voice it ....

"Let me say one thing, first." He check the door, making certain it was closed and latched, then spoke. "When Wednesday came to me about entering you in her advanced class, I was very happy to hear. She has never allowed 1st Years in her class since coming here, so you evidently made a great impression on her.

"But she will be watching you, as will I ... as will a number of instructors. You've set a high bar for yourselves, and there are people who want to see you push it higher. You do well with Wednesday, you may find others are going to find a place for you in their advanced classes.

"Please--" He looked about the room. "Using this for study is fine; I'm impressed that you asked for a place where you can work unhindered. But don't turn this into your private club house. Work when you need to work and walk about in the light the rest of the time. Enjoy all of the school." He smiled warmly. "You most assuredly enjoy the Madness."

He turned and reached to open the door. "You have the room for the school year. Do well and we'll see about next year before you leave." He turned back, his hand on the latch. "Anything else?"

Looking about the bare room, Kerry asked, "How can we get a few things in here, Professor?" He thought about the Charms Dungeon and how Professor Douglas had it set up. "I was thinking maybe a couple of chairs, two tables, a coat rack, love seat, a bookcase or two."

Kerry stepped just a little closer to Annie. "I'm thinking the more it's like a comfortable lab, the better."

Catching the quickly inserted "love seat", Holoč turned away from just a second so he could allow his hidden smile to escape. When the moment was over he turned back. "If that's all you require I'll contact our elves and ask them to furnish the room." The fatherly tone returned. "You'll need to pay for that service, however; any special work like that they require additional compensation." He tapped a small receptacle next to the door. "3 Galleons is the standard cost. Leave the money here either tonight or tomorrow."

Annie was thrilled at how their day had progressed so far. First she thought they were about to be given detention for the rest of the year and they were offered a place in the advanced charms class instead. And now they were being given this space to study in.

"Professor," Annie piped up. "There is one other thing I was wondering. Is the dungeon off limits after 9, or may we stay later?"

And that's another good question, Holoč thought. Just like my daughter; she sees everything.

"You are suppose to be in the tower by 9:30," he said, "unless you have reason to be out, or because of class or special functions. The Tower Dungeon is like the tower commons: you can stay up if you like, make certain you can get up in the morning."

He grinned, feeling he didn't need to elaborate on the last. "You have permission to use the room for study past 9:30." He raised an eyebrow. "Remember: we do prefer you are off to your beds to sleep before it's too late."

Annie's face felt like it was about to erupt into flames. She folded her arms across her chest and took a deep breath. "Thank you, Professor," she said, hearing her voice crack. "You've been most kind to allow us this privilege. We won't disappoint you."

"I'll leave a message for the elves; they should have your furniture in place either tonight or in the morning." He opened the door, ready to leave. "Don't forget to leave the payment--" He chuckled softly. "They are very good at repossessing when they aren't paid right away."

Holoč slipped out of the room, shutting the door behind him. As he ascended the stairs back to his office, he chuckled even louder. This is going to be a very interesting school year ....

Annie watched as their coven head disappeared out of the room, closing the door softly behind him. She hugged herself tighter and smiled. "That was simple enough." She touched a hand to her too warm cheeks. This is awkward... "We've got our own study space."

She gazed around the barren room. "I bet it'll look a million times better when we get it all decorated."

Kerry joined Annie, watching her face closely. I've never seen her that red before, he thought. Kerry understood the warning; it was, more or less, the second one they got that they should be on their best behavior--which they would be--

He slid his arms around Annie and held her tight. "We're really lucky that we're getting this chance." He pulled Annie into him, resting her head against his shoulder. "Every day I'm liking this more and more--" He kisses her red cheek and feel her sigh in his arms.

Annie hugged him tightly and felt better. "I'm happy he trusted us enough to let us use this space," Annie said, gently freeing herself from his embrace. "We shouldn't press our luck." She smiled and tapped him on the nose with her index finger.

"Besides, we need to pay the elf." She rolled the band of her school issued skirt down a bit, revealing a secret zipper underneath. "It's an Annie modification." She grinned as she eyed him. Watching his reaction, she unzipped the pouch and fished out four galleons.

"There," she said, securing the rest of her money and fixing her uniform. "That should buy us something quite nice." She dropped the coins into the holder and opened the door. "Maybe it'll be ready for us sometime this weekend," she shrugged.

"Let's do as promised and not be hermits," she giggled. Hand in hand, they made their way back up to the tower and the rest of the day that waited before them...
