The dungeon door creaked open, and Keith felt the dank air issue forth from it. A prefect that he recognized led all first years into the dungeons. The lighting, though similar to the rest of the tower, cast ominous shadows on the steps leading down. Keith filed in obediently with the others.
A lot was on his mind. There was a lot he wanted to know. Walking down the steps, he drowned out the clamor of his coven mates and instead wondered if his friends from the other covens were safe. He had been keeping to himself over the weekend, but had planned to talk to them in class. It wasn’t going to happen now.
Sobs echoed down the stairs from behind him. He looked up over his shoulder, but didn’t see who was crying. The voice was a girl’s, but he couldn’t tell if it was an echo or if more than one was crying.
This was crazy. He wasn't ready to fight. Dueling practice hadn't gone the way he had hoped. Depending on the older duelists and teachers was all he could do. He shook his head in renewed frustration. What would Steve say? Keith wasn't even sure what the Aurors were supposed to be doing right now.
They reached the bottom of the steps.
