Charms Class: 1st year lab

Wednesday took her time, walking the length of the charms lab, admiring the shiny surfaces of the two long lab tables. The elves have outdone themselves, burnishing out those scorch marks...

The first years were always tough on the equipment. You can't expect them to not cause a little damage here and there.

As she neared the end of the room, she turned and pulled out her wand to set up for her next class. When she was through, each table housed several weights, articles of clothing, colorful feathers, broken objects the elves had collected from around the school, and Wednesday's own brand of fireproof paper. It doesn't always prevent the scorching, but it'll do for now, she thought and giggled. First years sure did keep her on her toes.



OOC: This class will be set up as a LAB. That means you are to check out the APPROVED LIST OF SPELLS, thread and choose those FIRST YEAR EFFECT spells your character does not yet know to practice.

I WILL NOT BE HAND HOLDING IN THIS CLASS. The roleplay WILL be the star of the show here folks. Get creative and make it happen. You will also be expected to work together--no one will be separated out into different threads.

and, even though you are free to work more than one spell here--try to do one at a time, using the items provided on the lab table, so you don't confuse the goose...

THE WAY THINGS WILL WORK

In order for you to add a spell to your KNOWN SPELLS list (meaning you no longer have to roll that spell for effect), you need to hit a 50+ in THREE of FIVE attempts.

IC: Once she completed her set up, Wednesday retired to her office.

Today Kerry was feeling great. Tuesday had been Annie's birthday, and after she found the treat he left for her she'd been on a high for the last couple of days--not to mention that sitting out under the stars that night had been extra cozy.

Kerry was eager to get Charms down part, particularly these 1st Year effects. When he'd entered he'd read Professor Douglas' instructions, then started reading about the three effects he wanted to learn: Gravitas Penna, Locomotor, and Repairo. While it would seem that Gravitas Penna and Locomotor were one and the same, having a heavy laptop that was light as a feather was completely different than moving your bed around the room with your wand, and Kerry could understand the difference. As for Repairo . . . heck, as often as he'd broken things, it would come in handy--as long as he understood the Latin name for the object being repaired.

Kerry picked out his items for testing: three metal weights, a container with several wooden blocks, and a broken pair of glasses, an abacus, and a jewelry box. "Light as a feather--" He pointed to the weights, "Move you around--" said to the container, "And fix you all up nicely," he said as he lifted the jewelry box.

He looked around the room watching the others do the same. Of course Annie was close by, on his left. Over on the other table row were The Penny Dreadfuls, AKA Ella and Anna, who were already making a mess of things by further damaging some of the things they were suppose to repair. He remembered the lock Ella blew up the first class and hoped against hope she wasn't going to try Flagrante. I'll try that in the fire room in the dungeon, he thought. Rumor was already around school that their Covenmate, Gillian, had yesterday not only set one of the table counters on fire trying the charm, but had also lit up the sleeve of some guy's jacket. What is with all these Danger Witches? Kerry thought. And here I thought the magically born were suppose to have some kind of advantage . . ..

Ready as he was ever going to be, Kerry gave Annie a hug for good luck--his 12 year old girlfriend, yay!--and got ready to put on his game face.

Kerry laid the metal block before him, and looked it over. In his hand he guessed its weight about 2 kilos, which was going to be nice to making feather light. I'll balance this on my finger when I charm it, he thought.

Kerry sat it down and did the wand move as the Charms book described. In a clear voice he chanted, "Gravitas Penna."

Kerry picked up the metal cube and balanced it on his fingertip, then boosted it into the air with a quick upthrust. "Yep!" he said, catching the cube as it floated down. He set it aside and picked up the next weight, which felt like it weighed the same.

"Lets go two-for-two," he said to himself. He set about doing the wand movement, then chanted, "Gravitas Penna."

As he picked up the weight he smiled; it was just as he wanted. Seeing the evil glare Ella gave him he placed the cube on the middle finger of his right hand and gave it a spin, making certain Ella saw exactly what he was doing. Suck it, witch.

"One more to go," he said as he got the third weight ready. This was was a lot heavier than the first two: probably 5 kilos. All the better for when I bounce it off my head. He did the same wand movement like the first two times, saying, "Gravitas Penna," just like before.

When he picked the weight up Kerry the charm hadn't worked. Oh, well, just a minor set back. He must have showed some disappointment because he heard a giggle from the other tables. He didn't need to look to see who it was.

He got the wand ready. "Do it," he mumbled, then said "Gravitas Penna," as he directed his wand.

He could almost see it bounce off the table as the cube's weight changed. Kerry picked it up--yeah, that's the ticket. While she was distracted trying to keep from destroying whatever it was she was charming, Kerry threw the cube at Ella, shouting, "Head's up, Ella!" just as it was about to hit her. She managed a quick, panicked yell as it hit her in the forehead--

The weight bounced off Ella's head as she screamed, trying to duck out of the way. "Kerry!" she yelled, and not a few of the student snickered as they enjoyed her misery.

Damn Malibey! she thought as she tried to collect her thoughts--again! It seemed the whole day was full of distractions. First off she's hurt her ankle as she slipped getting out of the shower and had to see Nurse Boobies to get it healed. Then she was late for breakfast and had to gobble down her food before running off for class--and in the process she'd forgotten her coat so she and Anna--who'd also forgotten her coat as well--had to make a made dash through the light rain, getting wet in the process.

So she was having a real hard time getting it together.

Of course she was going to do Flagrante; of course she was Multicorfors, and of course she was going to transform her nails into claws using Transfiguro, 'cause despite what the stuck up witch Kishna said, she could so do transfigurations!

Ella would do Flagrante first, because... well, because. She set up a sheet of the fire proof paper Wendy the Good Witch left for them in a hanger and clipped a small piece of cloth to it. It wasn't enough for flame to shoot out of her wand; he wanted to see fire! Foo on these people, she thought. I'll do it my way: no one tells Ella Caldwell what to do!

She aimed the wand at the cloth. This is gonna be easy! she thought, and flicked her wand. "Flagrante!"

"Ha, ha!" Ella was almost jumping up and down as the cloth was scorched. "Hahaha! She was on a roll and didn't want to stop. "Here goes!" he almost yelled, then flicked her wand. "Flagrante!"

Nothing happened this time. "Oh, poo!" Ella said, grunting out the words. "No, you don't!" She didn't notice Anna--or anyone else--looking to see to whom she was speaking. "You will burn!"

With the cloth smoldering more and the scorch marks growing, Ella knew this next one would do the trick. I'll make it burn yet, she thought. Never mind that stupid rumor going 'round that Kerry Maybegay actually learned Incendio. Monkeys will fly out of my butt first, she thought.

With a quick flick of the wand Ella set her charm in motion. "Flagrante!"

Though the cloth wasn't burning, Ella knew she had the charm down cold. She looked around the room with a satisfied smile, as if to say, "Yeah, look at me... I can make fire." Losers, she thought. Why do I waste my time with these people?

She pushed her fire charm stuff to the side and pulled out an old white men's shirt. With this she was going to show everyone that Multicorfors was definitely a charm she knew. And it's such an easy thing with the wand....

Ella did a quick little side flick with the wand and said, "Multicorfors."

The white turned a blue... a sort of blue... Ella could see where you might think it was blue if you looked at it long enough. It didn't matter; she turned it. "Yeah, baby!" she shouted, and once more people looked in her direction.

She didn't care. "Eat my charms," she muttered as she did the same thing as before: "Multicorfors."

"Poop!" Nothing. She'd wanted it yellow and it was still sucky blue!

I know this charm! she thought. I shouldn't even have to practice this! It was an easy grade, and she didn't have to worry about showing people up.

She quickly flicked he wand again, crying out, "Multicorfors."

And it was yellow... sort of yellow. With a little blue stuck in the background. Ella had to admit that while it wasn't what she wanted, it looked nice.

"I want better!" she said through clenched teeth. "Multicorfors."

It wasn't fair. Ella had done this charm before... maybe she had a little help, but she knew it. I don't want to come back and practice this damn thing, she thought. I'll do it right this time!

When Ella threw down her wand and began stomping around her Own Private Idaho of her charms table, Kerry knew her latest attempt at Bringin' the Awesome had become another Magical Epic Fail. He shook his head and moved on. While Ella was good as a diversion, she was really too much of an oxygen thief to be of long-term interest.

Kerry moved the container of blocks front and center and pulled a few from it. He set one aside, then took three and bound them together and left the rest in the container. It was his plan to start small and work up, just as he'd done with the weights.

The wand motion was about as simple as you could get: point, command, and move--and once you were done moving give the wand a quick twist. "Simple enough," he said, "Let give it a go."

Stepping back from the table, Kerry pointed his wand and said the magic words, "Locomotor block."

And like that Kerry lifted the block into the air, hovering it about a half meter of the workspace. He moved it back a forth a bit, then set it down lightly and, with a twist of the wand, canceled the effect.

Now that I've got something small . . . Kerry pointed his wand at the bound collection of blocks. Point and--"Locomotor blocks."

He felt the effect almost go off, but it wasn't enough. Can't be perfect all the time, he thought, smiling as he watched Anna flicking her wand at nothing for no reason whatsoever.

"Third time always the charm," he said, then pointed and said, "Locomotor blocks."

This time, just as with the single blocks, all the blocks rose into the air as one. Kerry slowly turned, keeping his wand pointed in their direction as he moved them in a circle about his body. Satisfied he had control, he set the blocks upon the floor and killed the charm.

Kerry picked up those blocks--as well as the single one he'd moved the first time--and put them back into the container. Lets give them all a good move, he thought. Full of confidence, Kerry put the container in his wand sights and intoned, "Locomotor container."

Someone forgot to tell the container it was supposed to move. Kerry sighed, crossing his arms as he relaxed. Nearly a month into school and he knew getting upset over these things wasn't the way to go.

He cleared his head, then did a quick point of his wand at the container and said in a normal voice, "Locomotor container."

As he moved the container off the work space Kerry was smiling hugely. He was tempted to walk the container over the Ella's space and set it down before her, but considering the evil eye stare she was shooting his way, he thought it best he stay on his side of the room.

After he set it aside he went to get a drink of water. 'Cause repairing was up next . . ..

Annie waited until Kerry had gotten a few spells down before attempting her own. She watched him, impressed by his finesse as her eyes roamed greedily over his form--taking in his posture and the grace he used with his wand.

She felt herself blush. Not while Ella is standing in the room, Annie. Get it together... She shook her head and decided to start with Lumos and Nox. It's a beginning, she thought, as she pulled her wand free.

A quick swish and it should work. Annie held up her wand and began. "Lumos."

She stood like an idiot, staring at the end of her wand. Nothing. She sighed and decided to try the flicking a bit more this time.

She held her wand up and flicked it from the wrist. That feels right, she thought, taking a deep breath. Here goes..

Kerry saw Annie getting a bit frustrated with her charm. He slipped over next to her. "Hey, Annie," he whispered. "Maybe try something else if this is going sour." He pointed to everyone else. "It's no competition. Just relax like last time."

He gave her a peck on the cheek. "You know I know you can do it."
