The Phoenix Flames are unique to not only the Institute, but to schools of magical learning everywhere. All 1st Years must step into a circle set the in the floor of the Great Hall, whereby the are suddenly engulfed in flames that do not consume them.
Safely inside, the student is confronted by the Spirit of the Phoenix, as she calls herself. She questions the student to determine their "path" and then places them into the Coven she feels best fits their personality.
It is thought the Phoenix is a spirit that has watched over the Institute from the Days of Founding, as the stone circle where she speaks first appeared in its present location the morning following Founding Day.
