Working Spells in the Dungeon

Kerry was looking through the volumes, seeing if something was going to catch his eye. "With all the books in the library, I wonder if these are just general reference or some of these are different that in General Reading?"

He saw something and pulled it down. "I wonder if this is going to be interesting?" Kerry walked over and sat on the arm of Annie's chair. "Proper Use of Offensive Charms, by Mnemone Radford." He showed it to Annie. "Ring any bells?"

Annie flipped the lid of her own book closed and peered over at the find in Kerry's lap. "I remember reading about her," she said running a finger down the spine of his book.

"She's the witch who first developed memory modifying charms and became the first Ministry of Magic Obliviator. She was supposed to be really skillful with that charm so I bet that book will have a lot of great tips."

"Memory charms?" That sent a shiver down Kerry's spine. "Like changing your mind and stuff?" Kerry did a quick scan over the page that Annie had open. "Entrancing? False Memories? Supersensory Charm?"

Kerry leaned against the back of the chair. "That's some pretty advanced stuff."

"Well, there is that," she said, "and then there is Obliviate. It's a tricky spell to get right, but if you do, you can erase some or even all memories from the mind of your victim." She shivered in the chair.

"The ministry uses obliviators to perform memory charms on muggles who might have witnessed something they should not have." Annie handed the book back to Kerry. "If we try any of these, we might have some explaining to do later about why we can't quite remember who we are."

"Or if we tried them on someone else," he said, putting the book back. He looked about for some other books that might catch his interest. "Now this looks interesting--" He pulled it out. "Healing Charms for the Layman--" He saw another right next to it. "And Charms Theory Made Easy."

Annie joined him and knelt down in front of the closest shelf. The books here were a good mix of theory and practical charms magic.

"How about this one?" She pulled out a thick volume. "Extreme Incantations. Sounds like something we could both have a little fun with."

Nodding, Kerry said, "I like that. It's got that feeling like . . ." He held Annie around the waist. "Like you have to hold on tight."

Annie was swept up in Kerry's arms. She wrapped her free arm around his neck and kissed him. "I'll never let go, Kerry," she assured him.

"What do you say?" She slipped her arm around his waist and tucked the thick volume under her arm. "Should we take this book out to the table and try some of the spells?"

After the kiss Kerry was ready to try anything. "lets do this. Maybe if we learn everything by the end of the year they'll let us graduate early." He took Annie by the hand and led her back to their study area.

Once they were back, Annie hopped up on the square table and flipped the book open to the middle. "This one sounds interesting. The charm Evanui causes the target to become invisible...or close to it. It sounds almost like a chameleon." She giggled.

"It's a sixth year charm though." She folded her feet up under her. "That will be tough to pull off."

Kerry looked over the charm description and saw the action was pretty easy: tap someone on the head and do the incantation.

He set the book aside and looked Annie up and down. "Let me see if I can do this," he said, not really certain he could pull this off . . ..

He tapped Annie lightly on the top of the head and said, a bit softly, "Evanui".

Nothing happened, but Kerry wasn't going to let it go. Not now. For some strange reason he wanted to see Annie turn invisible. She's already like the Dark Phoenix; now I can make her into Sue Storm!

He tapped her again, softly, and uttered, "Evanui".

Nothing happened, but Annie seemed to shudder just a little. That wasn't my best, Kerry thought. Not even close.

For the heck of it he gave Annie a kiss as he tapped her on the head, then smiled as he said, "Evanui".

And like that . . . Annie vanished.

One minute she was on the table, and then--poof! Clothing and all, invisible.

"Annie!" Kerry was almost hoping around. He couldn't believe he'd just made someone invisible. "You vanished!" He started reading to see how to get her back. "You're really gone!"

Annie sat, completely stunned. I'm invisible... She held out her hand and saw it there, the same as it was before. In fact, nothing in her field of vision had changed at all. She still saw her body, her hands, her legs...

For a second, she thought he might be fooling with her, but the urgency in his face made her nervous. "Kerry, do you know how to make me visible again," she said, the panic starting to rise. "That might have been something useful to know before we started."

Kerry heard Annie's disembodied voice coming from where she had been sitting, so he knew she was alright. Bringing her back . . . He began going over the info on Evanui. That might have been a good idea . . ..

He found what he was looking for. "I need to cast Finite Incantatem to bring you back." He read the passage over. "I need to stand back, 'cause I gotta do a big wave." Before he did he reached out and felt for Annie; she was right where she'd been sitting, but her could feel her and not seem her, though . . . I see something strange right at the edge of my hand. Like she said, a chameleon. She's blending into everything around her.

Kerry stood back. Whipping his arm around, he chanted, "Finite incantatem!"

Nothing. Annie was still invisible. "Well, then, lets try this--"

He brought the arm around again, though with a little less brevity. "Finite incantatem!"

Kerry didn't want to say he felt a little worry, but . . . Sheesh, I hate to have to get a teacher to undo this. Kerry knew he was getting a little bit of anxiety, but he didn't let it get him down.

This time, for sure, he thought . . . "Finite incantatem."

And still nothing. Kerry paused, thinking for a moment. Annie didn't seem bothered, so there was that . . . I'm trying to hard, he thought. It's just like I told her. Relax. Don't push it.

Let it come.

That's what he'd do, then. Kerry stood and, bringing his arm around in a relaxed motion, said, "Finite incantatem!"

Kerry's face said it all. "I'm visible again?" Annie laughed. "You're remarkable, Kerry."

And Annie was sitting right there, like she'd never vanished. His smile was huge. "You're back!" He ran over and kissed her again, just to make certain she hadn't changed.

"I loved that! It was freaky to see you go like that." He wanted to go again, but knew to give Annie a try. "You wanna try?"

"Do I ever!" Annie snatched up her wand and practiced the wand movement. When she was quite comfortable, she gave Kerry a quick peck on the cheek and said, "Evanui."

"This is tough," she said, trying more wrist movement with her second attempt. "Maybe like this?" She tapped Kerry gently on the top of his head. "Evanui."

Annie stared in awe at the seemingly empty room. "Kerry?" She reached out to where she last saw him standing. "Where are you?"

Kerry knew Annie had done it; she was reaching around like she couldn't see him--which she couldn't.

"This is fantastic." Kerry saw himself reach out for her. He touched her reaching hand. "Right here, Sweetie." He swooped in and gave her a kiss on the lips. "Bet you never thought this would happen, not after what happened in class."
